Three people are dead and 18 first responders have been hospitalized after exposure to an unknown substance at a home in Mountainair, New Mexico, authorities said.
The incident occurred Wednesday when law enforcement responded to a suspected narcotics overdose at a residence around 11 a.

Upon arrival, officers found four unresponsive individuals inside the home.
Three were pronounced dead at the scene, while the fourth was rushed to the University of New Mexico Hospital.
First responders who entered the home began experiencing dizziness and nausea shortly after exposure. Eighteen emergency workers were taken to the hospital for treatment.
Mountainair Mayor Peter Nieto confirmed that three of four local EMTs have been discharged.

However, EMS Chief Josh Lewis remains hospitalized for overnight monitoring after being the first to enter the home.
Investigation Ongoing
Hazmat teams from Albuquerque Fire Rescue are conducting tests to identify the substance. Investigators believe the threat spreads through physical contact, not airborne transmission.
Authorities have secured the area and stated there is no wider public threat. Mountainair Public Works has ruled out carbon monoxide and natural gas as causes.
“At this time, we do not know the exact cause,” Mayor Nieto said. “However, all indications are pointing toward narcotics as a possible factor.
