Severe storms and persistent rainfall threaten to disrupt holiday travel across the US East Coast during the upcoming Memorial Day weekend, according to reports from the National Weather Service.

The wet weather follows a brief period of intense heat earlier in the week, causing a significant temperature drop as the holiday weekend approaches.

Meteorologists warn that the conditions could lead to localized flash flooding and severe travel delays.

In the Pittsburgh area, temperatures plunged from near 90 degrees on Monday and Tuesday into the 60s and low 70s by Wednesday.

The region is entering an unusually wet meteorological period, with rain chances remaining high through Monday.

National Weather Service meteorologist Andrew Kienzle provided details on the upcoming weather patterns and potential flooding risks.

"We could be heading towards what could be one of the wetter portions of our year so far," said Kienzle, from the NWS office in Moon.

Forecasters estimate a 70 percent chance that the region will receive at least one inch of rain over a 48-hour period spanning Saturday and Sunday.

Kienzle explained that while the overall risk remains low, specific areas could face higher precipitation totals from localized heavier storms.

"Even if grandma's house only got an inch of rain, there could be a couple of places elsewhere in the region that snag a little bit more rain, and that's going to depend on exactly where those heavier showers or thunderstorms set up," Kienzle said.

A brief clearing may occur on Sunday morning, but widespread showers are projected to return for the majority of Memorial Day.

Temperatures are expected to climb back near 80 degrees by Sunday and Monday, with the warming trend likely continuing into the following week alongside decreasing chances of rain.
