A historic seaside landmark in Southend-on-Sea is set for revival after a lease agreement was finalized on May 22, 2026, transferring control of the site to local entertainment operator Star Amusements.
Remblance Leisure Limited, led by Star Amusements, officially took over the lease for the Grade II-listed Kursaal building from property group AEW, with assistance from Southend-on-Sea City Council.

The venue has been mostly vacant since 2020, when safety concerns and the closure of the Rendezvous Casino left only a Tesco Express operating on the ground floor.
The building subsequently fell into disrepair.
Star Amusements, which already runs multiple attractions on the Southend seafront along with pubs, chip shops, and bowling alleys in Southend and Chelmsford, plans a structured multi-stage restoration without any financial subsidy from the council.
Council and MP Welcome the Lease
Daniel Cowan, leader of Southend-on-Sea City Council, said the administration now has the right partner to bring the Kursaal back into use and unlock its potential.
He described the lease assignment as a major moment for Southend and a clear example of the administration delivering on regeneration and investment.
Cowan added that the council will continue to provide stable leadership to drive growth and build civic pride.
Bayo Alaba, the Labour MP for Southend East and Rochford, expressed delight at the collaboration between the council and Star Amusements, noting that persistent community engagement helped advance negotiations.
Alaba launched a survey inviting residents to share ideas for the site's future, which has already gathered over 200 responses.

Phased Restoration and Community Input
Nick Singer, operations director at Star Amusements, said the immediate priority is essential repairs to protect the building, followed by a phased restoration to bring it back into use.
The company aims to create a high-quality, family-focused leisure and entertainment destination that can once again make the Kursaal a central attraction on the seafront.
Singer emphasized that formally taking on the lease means they can start the next chapter for the Kursaal, and that the investment aligns with broader development goals for the coastline.
He also stressed the company's commitment to Southend's reputation as a safe, welcoming destination.
The Kursaal previously hosted performances by iconic rock bands such as Queen, AC/DC, and The Kursaal Flyers, and holds a special place in local history.
Cllr Matt Dent, cabinet member for culture, tourism and business, said bringing the Kursaal back into use will strengthen what the city can offer residents and visitors, supporting local businesses and creating more reasons for people to spend time in Southend.
