Brian Herbert, who continued his father's novel series after Frank Herbert's death in 1986, expressed strong approval of director Denis Villeneuve's two films released in 2021 and 2024.
In a 2024 social media post after a private screening of the second movie, Brian Herbert wrote, "It is gratifying to see my father's story told with such great care."
He added that when combined, the two films represent "by far the best film interpretation of Frank Herbert's classic novel 'DUNE' that has ever been done."
Brian Herbert has been involved in the development of the modern adaptations from the start.
He worked with producers Mary Parent and Cale Boyer, as well as screenwriter Eric Roth, to ensure the scripts remained faithful to the original lore.

MacLachlan on Paul Atreides' Morality
Kyle MacLachlan, who played Paul Atreides in David Lynch's 1984 adaptation, discussed the character's complex morality during an interview at Emerald City Comic Con 2026.
"Of course he's a hero," MacLachlan said.
He explained that he first read the book at age 15 and revisited it nearly every year before unexpectedly receiving a casting call for the 1984 film.
The exploration of Paul Atreides' character will be central to Villeneuve's upcoming Dune: Part Three, which adapts the 1969 novel Dune Messiah.
