Millennials Narrow Retirement Savings Gap Behind Older Generations
Millennials are steadily closing the retirement savings gap with older generations, according to recent data from Fidelity.
However, average figures often mask how far behind many individual savers in this age group remain.

The average 401(k) balance for millennials stands at approximately $83,700.
For older millennials who have stayed with the same employer plan for at least five years, that average exceeds $300,000.
Millennials, born between 1981 and 1996, now allocate roughly 13.5% of their earnings toward retirement when including employer matching contributions.
This approaches the 15% rate often recommended by financial advisors.
Despite this progress, millennials still trail Generation X, who save above 15%, and Baby Boomers, whose contribution rates exceed 17%.
The oldest millennials are nearing age 45, while the youngest are under 30.
Savings Patterns and Investment Choices
Older millennials who have practiced consistent saving habits show significantly stronger financial positions.
Fidelity reports that those who remained with a single 401(k) plan for five years or more hold balances well above the generation-wide average.

A notable trend is the allocation of retirement contributions.
More than 70% of millennials have placed all of their 401(k) assets into a single target-date fund, a higher utilization share than any older generation.
These funds automatically adjust asset allocation as the investor nears retirement, prioritizing stocks early and shifting toward bonds later.
This approach simplifies investment decisions for many savers.
Other industry studies confirm these findings.
An Empower snapshot from January 2026 shows that savers in their 30s have an average balance of $212,000, but the median balance is just $79,000.
For individuals in their 40s, the discrepancy is even more pronounced, with an average of $410,000 versus a median of $157,000.

This widening spread indicates that a small segment of high-volume savers elevates the overall averages.
Historical Factors Hindering Savings Progress
Economic timing created significant disadvantages for many millennials at the start of their careers.
The oldest members entered the job market during the early 2000s and faced the disruptions of the Great Recession.
During that period, unemployment among young workers surged to approximately 15%. Those who remained employed still encountered economic hurdles, as wage growth experienced prolonged sluggishness.
This economic stagnation forced many to prioritize immediate financial necessities over retirement planning that felt decades away. Additionally, entering the workforce with substantial student debt burdened the generation.
Many millennials used their early earning years to pay down educational liabilities instead of allocating funds to a 401(k).
According to Experian, millennials carried an average student loan balance of $33,000 in 2025.
Despite these challenges, the generation's current savings rate shows improvement.
