Kennedy Jr. in the late 1980s.

The actress responded after her daughter, Rowan Henchy, discovered the reference while working as a production assistant on the show.
Daughter's Discovery Sparks Conversation
Rowan Henchy called her mother immediately after hearing the script dialogue that referenced Shields as a past love interest of Kennedy.
“That was a little weird,” Shields told People in an interview published on May 18, 2026.
“I was away, and my daughter called me and she says, ‘Oh my God, you’re mentioned in Love Story,’ and she’s like, ‘Is it true?’”
Shields verified the historical accuracy of the television reference, leading to lighthearted family conversations about her past.
“I was like, ‘OK, I'd be happy to tell you all the stories if you want,’” the 60-year-old actress recalled telling her daughter, adding, “but—yes.”
The family dynamic regarding her past fame has become an ongoing source of humor between Shields and her daughters, Rowan and Grier.
“I’m their mother, so it’s easier to make fun of me, or say, 'Ugh, Mom, okay, fine. We get it.
You were big in the ’80s and ’90s.' Because otherwise, then I’m sort of property of everybody else,” Shields stated.

According to Shields, the two went to a local pub alongside members of the Kennedy family before leaving together for a hotel.
“And I was like, 'Uh, yeah, I do want to get out of here, John Kennedy,'” she said.
The encounter resulted in a memorable kiss, though Shields chose to limit the physical boundaries of the date out of emotional caution.
“He kissed me, and it was like the best kiss I've ever had in my life. It was beyond not-disappointing,” Shields recalled.
“The lips are beautiful, and the face is amazing, and the body and the person, and he was down to earth and funny and irreverent.”
Shields clarified that she deliberately halted the romance because she feared emotional vulnerability and the potential of being ignored afterward.
