Genetics, chronic stress, and specific lifestyle choices are the main drivers of premature gray hair in individuals during their 20s or late teens, according to medical and cosmetology experts.
While most people notice their first gray hairs in their 30s or 40s, diminished melanin production over time alters hair pigmentation, explained board-certified dermatologist Mona Gohara, MD.

Key Factors Behind Early Graying
Dr. Gohara stated that genetic inheritance from parents or grandparents heavily influences early graying. If your parents or grandparents grayed early, you are more likely to as well.
Other contributing elements include oxidative stress and deficiencies in vitamin B-12 or copper. Medical conditions such as thyroid problems or pituitary issues can also cause premature graying.
Smokers face a 2.5 times higher likelihood of graying early, Dr. Gohara noted. Chronic tension accelerates pigment loss, though it does not change hair color overnight.
“Stress has been shown to contribute to the depletion of stem cells responsible for hair color,” said Dr. Gohara.
She added that commercial reversal products lack scientific validity, warning, “Don’t believe the hype in terms of reversal.”

Managing the Cosmetic Transition
To manage the cosmetic transition, salon experts recommend specific hair coloring and cutting techniques rather than applying uniform dark dyes.
Hairdresser Rebecca Johnston from Rebecca Johnston Hair noted that individuals turning gray often experience a washed-out appearance if they previously maintained dark hair.
Johnston suggested adopting lighter hair shades, highlights, or face-framing layers to brighten the face.
“You don’t have to embrace the grey, but you could get some highlights that brighten up your face, and if you have longer hair, you could get some layers put around your face just to open up your cheekbones,” she said.
The stylist added that adding features like bangs offers an affordable alternative to aesthetic procedures.

“If you want to change your appearance but are scared to cut all your hair off, then adding a fringe or bangs is a great way to do this, and it’s cheaper than Botox,” Johnston said.
Kristina Bynum, owner of Salon Le Volume, supported this multi-dimensional approach, warning against flat colors.
“Flat, one-dimensional colour, especially darker shades, can absorb light and make your overall look dull. Natural hair colour has variation within it.
It catches the light differently in different areas,” she said.
Bynum concluded that blending techniques provide a lower-maintenance solution for clients. “More and more, I am guiding my clients towards grey blending instead.

This allows the greys to naturally exist within highlights or lowlights to result in a more dimensional and easier to maintain style,” she said.
