ABC has officially ordered a new spinoff series from the "Grey's Anatomy" franchise, set to debut during the 2026-27 television season.

The network announced the straight-to-series order on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, bypassing a traditional pilot process.

The untitled one-hour drama will shift the medical franchise from Seattle to a rural environment in West Texas.

According to the official logline, the series follows a medical team operating at a rural medical center that serves as a critical healthcare outpost across miles of isolated territory.

Creative Team Behind the Spinoff

Franchise creator Shonda Rhimes and current "Grey's Anatomy" showrunner Meg Marinis are co-creators of the new series.

They will serve as executive producers alongside Betsy Beers and original series star Ellen Pompeo.

Production will be handled by Shondaland and 20th Television.

Netflix retains its primary distribution partnership with Shondaland, while Disney, the corporate parent, owns both ABC and 20th Television.

Marinis, a Texas native, expressed enthusiasm about the project.

"This opportunity will bring new characters and stories to life that will embody the same heart, emotion and connection audiences have loved from 'Grey's' for more than two decades -- all set in my home state of Texas," she said.

She also credited Rhimes for creating the franchise's foundation.

"I am so grateful to Shonda Rhimes for creating this dynamic world and feel so fortunate that I get to be a part of it," Marinis added.

Expanding the Franchise

The new spinoff marks the latest expansion of the "Grey's Anatomy" universe, which originally premiered in 2005. The flagship series is currently airing its 23rd season on ABC.

This order continues ABC's strategy of expanding its scripted lineup.

The network has been building on the success of its long-running dramas, including "Grey's Anatomy" and its previous spinoff, "Station 19."

The West Texas setting offers a distinct backdrop compared to the urban Seattle environment of the original series.

The rural medical center concept emphasizes the challenges of providing healthcare in remote areas.
